Yuzu tortes and Mandarin bonbons? Dive into a citrus blast this Diwali

Our round-up of binge-worthy tangy offerings for eating and gifting this festive season
Yuzu tortes and Mandarin bonbons? Dive into a citrus blast this Diwali

As we party-hop, shop and chomp through this season — exchanging sweets on Diwali remains one of the treasured traditions. Recently, we could not stop talking about the slice of the gluten-free Almond & Orange cake at the new Mixed Cafe kiosk at Express Avenue. Following that citrus trail this year, we have curated our Diwali gift list of favourite tangy offerings from some interesting kitchens in the city. Expect a twist of tart to the repertoire with oranges and lemons being our star flavours of the month!

Lemon mascarpone cake
A slice of this luscious cake definitely personifies festivity and indulgence. Perfected by Cindana Manickavel of Sugar Monkeys, the recipe includes a sponge cake base that is tangy with lemon juice and bits of zest for the signature lemony flavour. Of course the centre is what we are gushing about — frosted with Italian meringue and stuffed with mascarpone cheese and lemon curd to bring home the tartness! Half a kilo at INR 900. Sitafal & orange ice-cream
Anytime is a good time for ice cream and Diwali is no exception. Bhavna Arya has whipped together some new flavours under her home-based brand Intox, and has also laid out some spiffy new ice cream boxes to boot for this season. We find their flavour of sitafal and orange to be a fascinating combination. Relish real, juicy chunks of orange pulp in the custard apple ice cream. At INR 900 per box. Details: 95001-13344

Lemon truffles
This stuffed chocolate ganache has lemon rind and lemon extract in the mix. The melt-in-the-mouth silken texture is accentuated thanks to the Belgium chocolate used. At 45 per cent dark, these bonbons make for a great gift as they can woo both the dark chocolate lovers and the fans of milk chocolate. Available at Nicky’s Cafe and Fine Pastries, at INR 850 for a box of 18.

Yuzu lime chiffon torte
Once you know the price of the lemon used in this three-layered cake we guarantee you that you will be polishing off every single crumb carefully! With an almond shortcake base, the topping is a fluffy yuzu lime cheese filling, which is topped with yuzu lime zabaglione and glazed with torch. This exotic Japanese lime juice is a refreshing and soothing ingredient albeit at INR 7,000 for a kg! Available on request at La Patisserie, the cake shop at Taj Coromandel. Priced at INR 1,500 all-inclusive for half kg.

Spicy mandarin sunrise
Soft textured, these gourmet orbs promise healthy and natural ingredients. Fuzzy with fragrant orange zest, after that first bite expect a sharp aftertaste of paprika to offset the sweetness. Created by home-baker Maria Priyanka Ravindran, the founder of Healthy Chef, these energy balls are made of toasted rolled oats, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, flax and honey. She has conjured up seven other flavours that include ingredients like black cocoa and beetroot powder. A box of 10 at INR 400. Details: 96323-65584

Lemon pudding cups
Just right for one person, these bowls of creamy indulgence are sprinkled with lemon zest and tick all the boxes for a sugar junkie! Tangy and best had chilled; this one is topped with a generous dollop of whipped cream, and unsurprisingly one of Crave By Suman Gandhi’s popular orders. Besides this dessert, Suman has celebrated lemons in the Coconut and Lemon energy balls and her version of lemon cupcakes. Lemon pudding at INR 95 each, minimum order five cups. Details: 974008-9227
