Natural preserves brand Sugar & Spice brings its product line to Kochi

Most Indians have this nostalgia for their mother’s food. From a modern-day food and beverages industry perspective, many women turn into foodpreneurs to create safe dining options for their children. This is the inception story of Coimbatore-based Sugar & Spice run by a mother-daughter duo Annie and Sapna Koshy.

“Our brand came out of an association between a grandmother’s quest to make interesting new food for her grandchild and my entrepreneurial vision. Two years ago, we decided to go big with it and invited our friends and family for a tasting and haven’t looked back ever since,” says Sapna. Indulge finds out what this label has to offer as they enter Kochi’s market.

Starting off with three flavours, they’ve found a way into dining halls across the country through their popularity on social media and presence at pop-up markets. The duo now has 12 flavours on their catalogue including BananaRum and Mango-Jalapeño in jams and preserves, and Salted caramel and Sweet chilli pineapple in sauces.

So, what makes them stand out from factory-made jars?

“All our products are 100 per cent natural, meaning we don’t use preservatives, added flavours or thickening agents. We also stick to small batches of 20-25 kgs—which are painstakingly reduced over slow cooking—to maintain quality,” says Sapna, cautioning that their preserves have a shorter shelf life due to this.

Careful in sourcing their raw materials, they collect it directly from farms or trusted vendors. The brand is currently expanding into retail marketing, finding a permanent showcase shelf in the city after a trial run at On flea.k 2019.
