The table eggs-periment at Besant Nagar

Table 70 is on a mission to make eggs great again, and we’re not complaining
The table eggs-periment at Besant Nagar

"My mother used to tell me that the way to someone’s heart is through the stomach. I didn’t know what that meant until I tasted Joseph’s food,” says 63-year-old Ramanathan, owner of Table 70, as he smiles at his Chef Joseph Pereira.

Listening to the story of how the two met and became friends over food, their 26-year age difference aside, is like watching a movie play out. “I frequented a restaurant in Bengaluru, where Joseph was the chef, and gave him my card asking him to get in touch with me if he ever wanted to start up in Chennai,” he recalls, adding that it wasn’t until two years later that talks of a venture actually began. On June 8, Table 70, named after the fact that it can seat 70 people, finally set up shop in Besant Nagar.

Going global

The restaurant serves vegetarian and egg dishes including omelettes, frittatas, toasts, starters, drinks,
desserts and plated meals. Look at the menu to find out what cuisines are on offer and you will find an
eclectic mix. “From Italian to Thai to Mexican, you’ll find a little bit of everything here,” says Joseph.

The chef of 20 years has a few stories up his sleeve, like the one behind how he invented the Egg
Wrap Noodle, a noodle dish served in an egg crepe container. “On a hungry morning I threw in two sauces and some cooked noodles I found lying around my kitchen. It was never meant to be a dish, it was just my hunger fix!” he laughs, stating that the container was introduced as a creative way to include eggs in the dish.

Chlorophyll fix

Try classic favourites like the Wild Mushroom Pasta, with a creamy three-cheese base seasoned with fresh parsley, basil and oregano, and Khow Suey, the Burmese favourite with a pronounced coconut flavour and an assortment of vegetables. Look out for the cross-over specials like the Desi Penne Pasta, featuring a red pepper couli base suited for the Indian palate. We loved sipping on our smoothies with cryptic names like Pink Lady, a delightfully sweet almond and cherry drink, and the aptly named Chlorophyll Fix, an incredibly refreshing concoction made of mint, coriander, oregano and basil amongst other ingredients of green goodness.

Meal for two costs Rs. 550 (approx). Details: 30853518
