Skip Sowcarpet crowds, Kakada Ramprasad opens in Kilpauk

Now you don’t have to navigate the crowded streets of Sowcarpet to gorge on Kakada Ramprasad’s timeless Gujarati meals. The famous sweet shop named after him has opened its second restaurant in Kilpauk.

It all started 60 years ago when Ramprasad Kakada set up a stall in Sowcarpet from where he sold two to three varieties of sweets and kachoris. Today, their outlet in North Chennai attracts people from 40 km away. “People from OMR, ECR… the IT crowd travels all the way to eat at the Sowcarpet restaurant. On Saturdays it would be packed,” says Ravi Kakada, the founder’s grandson.

And the quest for a plate of ‘authentic North Indian food’ has just become easier. Their sweets and chaats outlet in Kilpauk is almost a year-old and it has been two weeks since the restaurant section has opened. So, leave the hustle behind and lose yourself in their brand-new Bharwan Aloo. It looks like stuffed onion rings, but it’s potato. Bite into the spicy crust and you will hit the soft potato and savour the stuffing. The filling is memorable on its own.Vegetables and paneer crumbs folded with warm spices and sweet raisins.
They have retained their classics — their thali and breads— however they have added dishes with a contemporary twist. “We’ve moved towards a fine-dining experience and changed the way we serve our dishes,” adds Ravi, who is also the managing director here.

Then comes a plate of Mexican Nachos. Tall, thin tortilla chips on a bed of beans and salsa are arranged sideways to form a mountain. Munch on them while downing a glass of their popular Kesar badam milk. Or slurp on margaritas, served with salt and a cone of soft ice. It is only when the small, brown pot arrives that we truly lose ourselves. Open it, and you can pick up notes of saffron, ghee, spices and all things nice. Their Handi Biriyani is a pot full of flavours and we assure you that they have stayed true to their roots.

At 32, Ormes Road, Kilpauk. Meal for two: Rs 600. Details: 26442851
