Restobars are popping up in all corners of Chennai. And 6th Avenue is here to quench Vadapalani’s thirst. Complete with a dance floor and even a periodic table of beverages to choose from, this week-old outlet aims to give a facelift to local ingredients -— both in food and drink.

“We wanted to create a space for Vadapalani residents to chill. Now, the closest restobar is Big Bang Theory in Kodambakkam,” says chef Manikandan V, who heads  operations at the outlet in Hotel Bhimaas. When it comes to food, the chef says they wanted to keep it simple and work with traditional flavours.

As we take our seats in their cobalt blue couches, a plate of Pongal Arancini arrives. Arancini, the Italian dish of deep-fried risotto balls, has gone South Indian here: balls of creamy white pongal with a dollop of tomato chutney in the middle, coated in parmesan cheese. There’s also a pickle mayonnaise to give it a punch. Their peri-peri chicken—spicy and salty—opens up our taste buds. “It’s my signature dish,” smiles the chef who has curated menus for restobars like BOATS and Thirsty Crow. And as we taste their moist biryani and spicy Chettinad chicken, our cocktail arrives.

It looks like a glass of mojito, with crushed mint leaves, bubbling water and a wedge of lime. The flavours are earthy, addictive and strangely reminded me of a drink my grandmother made. “It’s a pomegranate and nannari collins,” says Harinath P, the beverage consultant. Nannari sherbet, made from the Indian sarsaparilla roots, is a natural coolant. Harinath, who was one of the top three global finalists in the 2011 Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition, says they plan to keep the cocktail menu open and customise it on request. They are already planning a second outlet soon — a sports bar in Anna Nagar, we are told.

Cost for two Rs 1,200.
