Did you know that there are asparagus farmers in India? This Sunday, you can meet not one but 50 farmers at SunnyBee’s Farmer’s Market in Nungambakkam. Oh and did we mention the 7.5 tonnes of fresh produce sourced from as far as Kalpakkam to Pune?

Expect strawberries from Mahabaleshwar, peaches from Kashmir and closer home, Indian plums cultivated in Ooty. Apart from exotic produce, you can also buy more familiar country vegetables like bottle gourd, ash gourd and ladies finger. Sanjay Dasari, the store’s co-founder who is all of 23, says this is not the first time the store is organising a farmer’s market, the scale is definitely unprecedented. And if you are wondering what to ask a farmer about, don’t worry, the conversation gap isn’t as  large as one might expect. “Once a customer was surprised when a farmer pulled out a smartphone and showed him videos of his farm,” recalls Sanjay.

Look out for hydroponic produce (a technique where plants are grown without soil) and potted herbs like basil and mint that can be freshly plucked for your pasta.

On January 21. At SunnyBee, Nungambakkam. 9 am to 9 pm. Price: Rs 5 to Rs 350.
