With about a month to go before the mangoes bid goodbye to us, Hyderabad Marriott and Convention Centre is pulling all stops to make the most of the season. While the regular restaurants make do with aamras and mango smoothies and perhaps aam panna, the hotel, and its dining places –Okra, the 24-hour diner, Bidri the Indian specialty restaurant, Lounge bar Altitude and the Hyderabad Baking Company, the deli, are infusing the fruit into every delectable dish. “The city is blessed with a good bounty of mangoes. We have access to both local and other varieties and we are making the most of the season. I had a meeting in mid-May (when the best of mangoes are available) with all the chefs and decided it’s all or nothing. In fact, even our spa – Tattva – chimed in saying it would love to give a mango facial and a foot massage to the guests,” informs General Manager Shrikant Wakhakar. From Banganpalli to Alphonso and Kesari, best breeds from across India have been summoned here.

Executive Chef Aungshuman Chakraborty and team curated for us a 360-degree menu of the fruit in its raw and ripe form. On the chef’s recommendation, we started with their refreshing Mango Mojito with a good dose of vodka and the mango pulp along with a sprig of mint. Mango definitely makes its presence felt. It had cubes of ripe Alphonso in it. Continuing on the mango vibe, the next was Mango Strudel that came looking like a cassata ice cream. As we dug into it, the taste of mango mingled with the cinnamon sugar topping and it was a sugar rush. Meanwhile, the team from Okra presented Mango Salsa and Mango Kosambari. The first was a spicy, yet sweet offering with mango pieces in its own pulp with a bit of red chili, salt and other ingredients. The kosambari was a grated preparation mixed with cucumber. Needless to say, they were great as accompaniments and as standalone too. The Quesadilla with some mango pieces and baked rajma beans was a surprise too. Slightly tangy but ideal for an evening snack. The dessert counter had Mango Parfait and other Mango Pastries. Looking sunny with sunset yellow cream and bits of the fruit on it, the desserts were great visually, and on the taste buds too.

Not be left behind, Tattva Spa also has a mango foot massage. A quick 20-minute executive foot session, the therapist put some smoothly ground mango pulp on my soles. Although I wouldn’t say what was smeared on my foot hardly made a difference to the massage, (in fact, my feet felt sticky) the fragrance of the fruit seemed to be doing a good job on the aromatherapy front.

At the end of the day, I felt I just finished an advanced course on mangoes. I ended it with another sprightly summer cocktail from Altitude. Never knew mangoes could give such a high!

Ends on June 15 (Altitude and HBC) and July 15 at Okra. Price for two: Rs.3,000.
