While craft beer enthusiasts will have to wait a little more, all you beer drinkers in the city can move on from regular draught beers to sip on easy-going beer cocktails this International Beer Day (August 3). They are not your regular chilled yellow brews but a potent mix of ingredients shaken with all kinds of fizzy beers taking over the city glass by glass, and how! Red, yellow and green — the colourful cocktails are appearing on many menus — mixed not only with orange juice, ginger ale and strawberry juice but also with sauces like teriyaki and soy among others, they make spicy, sweet and even sour cocktails.

There is a chance to also witness a lot more because they even come with theatrics. While molecular gastronomy is still to set in, expect to find an overturned pint of beer slowly draining into the glass while you enjoy your cocktail — and other such delights in our list of our favourites that you could sip if you are wondering how to celebrate International Beer Day and forget the number of carbohydrates in beer.

For the ‘Sake’ of it
The Leather Bar at The Park Chennai is celebrating International Beer Day with a unique infusion while taking inspiration from Sake, the Japanese alcoholic drink made from fermented rice, koji (rice malt) and water. The Sake Bomb, though simple, makes for an interesting combination as it is sweet, bitter and chilled, yet perfectly balanced and ideal for a lazy afternoon or early evening, to get the party started. Pair it with a classic Battered Fish and Chips accompanied with tartare sauce and malt vinegar, or a Mexican favourite of crisp nachos served with refried beans, guacamole and sour cream on the side. If Sake is not among your favourites, the dramatic Picnic should do the trick, with a potent mix of tequila, triple sec, lime, orange juice and Corona beer.

So saucy!
Innovating with the classic beers, Hilton Chennai is serving beers on request, with a twist that includes adding sauces to make a spicy cocktail. At Vintage Bank, Head Mixologist Gautham Shetty serves a potent Michelada, a Mexican cocktail made of beer, salt, sweet and sour and sauces like teriyaki sauce, soy and Worcestershire!  The cocktail packs a punch with a burst of flavours and is an interesting choice for conventional beer drinkers to experiment with. However, for all who like mojitos, the Beer Basil Mojito with Hoegaarden beer, chunks of orange, basil leaf, sweet and sour, is a good alternative. On the other hand, Beer Top is simplicity at its best with Kingfisher beer shaken with Sprite and lemon. The cocktail is ideally paired with red meats and the sticky pork belly is the perfect choice. Make your way through the pork which is twice cooked and served with stir-fried bok choy. The Char-grilled Mullets with a coriander relish are made with lime and honey, and are a must-try for seafood lovers.

Strawberry feels forever
Sure, fruits have been used in cocktails before, but imagine beer and strawberries. Yes, the uncanny combination is being served up at Park Hyatt Chennai’s The Flying Elephant. Going by the name of Strawberry Beer Mojito, it has a sweet combination of beer, juicy strawberries balanced with mint, as well as lime and soda, relying on the mix of the Cuban cocktail which is a crowd favourite. The mojito can be paired with a platter of wok-fried mushrooms, onions and bell peppers served with spicy sweet chilli-hoisin sauce or crispy fried wings with the perfect buffalo sauce, on the side. So, this International Beer Day, what’s your choice going to be?
