Jalebis, jamuns and jaangiris — it is that time of the year once again when our homes never seem to run out of sweets and savouries. Although our taste buds have become accustomed to indigenous desserts and dry fruit assortments and have been the norm so far, home bakers and confectioners of the city have revamped the gifting options this Diwali. From rasamalai cake jars to lemon pepper-infused cocoa bars — discover a symphony of flavours that are sure to add delight to your festival of lights.

Not just eye candy

Inspired by the beige soan papdi, kulfi and cotton candy cupcakes are baker Mahashri Rajkumar’s pick for the year. “Except for the making, these cupcakes resemble the texture of soan papdi and the way it melts in your mouth.” This baker’s cotton candy flavoured cupcake, which comes with a strip of bright pink cotton candy, has a heavy swirl of frosting in attractive hues and warrants a decadent tag. Offering a variety of goodies, The Cupcakes Cbe serves assorted cupcakes in six different flavours — litchi, kulfi, cotton candy, rose and red velvet bases accented with buttercream. Available on pre-order.

Starts from Rs.300.

Bean unexpected

‘Life is like a box of chocolates and you never know  what you are going to get.’ Infusions’ chocolate box will leave you reminiscing what Forrest Gump’s mama had told him. Borrowing heavily from Indian elements, this repertoire of chocolates are infused with flavours like desi paan, lemon pepper, gulabi lassi, mango and green chilli, Madras filter coffee among others. Each chocolate is moulded into different shapes with engraved motifs on the surface and colours on a few. Chocolatier Arun Viswanathan tells us that the hamper includes twelve pieces of chocolates, a hot chocolate cube, choco cookies, a nutty bar and a truffle. Prepared from Indian cocoa and organic palm sugar, this artisanal bunch of delicacies are low on calories. Available at Infusions Café. Starts at Rs.350.

As easy as cake

Sruthi Ramgopal of Sugar Crust is innovating a nouvelle dessert — perfectly crafted Indian fusion cake jars that hold layers of gulab jamun and rasamalai flavoured cakes topped with whipped cream and gulab (rose) essence. Generous blobs of jamuns and rasamalais also take their position through the layers of cake. This homebaker has recreated the same with cupcakes, topping them with a frosting that holds a jamun ball instead of a cherry. East meets west in this recipe with a  mix and stir. Also, her eggless granolas are a concoction of Belgian chocolate chips, grated dry fruits and nuts offering a crunchy appeal. Available on pre-order. Starts at Rs.300.

Origin of spices

Spicy tartlets slathered with jalapenos, corn and garlic are an alternate to traditional murukkus and thattu vadas, and retain the same savoury and crispy attributes — Choco-choza offers a plethora of gift hampers to choose from. Diwali also gives room to healthy ragi ladus and wheat halwa which never cease to delight us. Similarly, cakes prepared in whole wheat flour, millet flour, pure butter and unrefined sugar are healthy in disguise. Adding to these are the in-house pure Belgian chocolates in exotic flavours like almond rocher, dulce de leche, salted peanut butter. Also, look out for vibrantly coloured macaroons stuffed with butter giving it a fluffy interior and a crispy egg-shell like exterior. Available at the store and on ordering. Starts from Rs.145.

Smart cookie

French Door’s line of pastries will satiate your sweet tooth with its gastronomy française. The options include oatmeal and raisin cookies, chocolate and walnut fudge, dark chocolate truffles, among others. Their gift boxes come with four compartments- each of them filled with the mentioned assortments.  Rs.450.
