IT is that time of the year when trees have to be decorated and stockings have to be stuffed — Chennai gets into the spirit of the season with three fun markets this week.
Hit the street
Fourteen retailers located on the CP Ramaswamy Road in Alwarpet have come together with a unique concept of turning a street into a Christmas market. As a part of The Alwarpet Street Fest to be held this Sunday and the next, the street will be done up with lights, boughs and stars by decorators. “While we have invited around 10 outside vendors to come in and set up stalls on our porticos to sell cookies, cakes, chaat, decor items and such, the host retailers will be offering some specials such as seasonal products and gift offers along with their usual on the days of the fest,” says Dipu Krishnamurthi, one of the organisers of the fest and owner of Azurina, a women’s clothing label. Expect brands like Rosario’s baked goods, Naina’s Kitchen, Christmas ornaments by Vellachi and Kayel Jewellery apart from some stalls for kids.

To market, to market
Featuring over 12 stores from Chennai and Mumbai, Bend the Trend, the Chennai-based retail store is organising Secret Santa’s flea market on December 13. “The main reason why we call it a flea market is because as organisers, we have made sure that there are things in the market that suit every pocket,” said Kajal Batra, one of the organisers. Held at The Humming Room in KNK Road, the products available at the market include footwear, accessories, apparels and baked goodies along with home decor items including hand painted bottles and stalls offering free makeup trials, kid’s wear and more. The Christmas specials at the flea market include sugar coated cookies and plum cakes from the bakers and party wear suitable for Christmas and new year parties. “We have made sure that there is monopoly for the vendors by featuring only one retailer of a particular product,” she added.

Coconut to corn
With a wide range of home design and year-round festive décor items including Christmas specials, The Aadvark Design Store is exhibiting their decoration items made of natural and sustainable materials, for the first time in Chennai. Having started on December 6 at Pycrofts Garden Road in Nungambakkam, the exhibition that ends today features wreaths, table top arrangements, baubles, potpourri, trinkets and more, all of them made out of natural materials like coconut fibres, corn cobs and such. “My family has been in the decor industry for the past 25 years. We are extremely excited to introduce the brand to the local market especially at the time of Christmas,” says Anjali Motha George, the owner of Advark Design who added that the pop-up will be taken to Bengaluru next.
