Taking cue from all of her travels around the country, Anna Nagar-based independent architect and designer Shreelekha Raghavan has been yearning to showcase the many marvellous designs that she has discovered over the years. Finding the right partner in ECR-based Vaishnovi Reddy, who also happens to be her friend Shyla Reddy's daughter, the duo have now curated their first exhibition in the city, which will find artists from all over the country and Chennai present their designs. “Even though we are actually a generation apart, we realised during our conversations that we had similar tastes in design and were keen on doing something more than just run our business,” says the architect, who runs her own brand, Feet & Inches, while Vaishnovi runs the two-year-old label, Gunava Designs.

This and that
The exhibition, called White Space Design, is a pop-up that is set to bring the newest trends in home décor and interior design to Chennai to provide a breath of fresh air with exquisite designs on display. “Since we both travel a lot and get to learn about regional crafts as well as witness different art exhibitions, we realised that Chennai had a big vacuum in terms of designer stores,” Shreelekha explains. While a store is not on the cards any time soon, the designer, who has been in the industry for a little over two decades, aims to fill a certain void with this event, which has 12 interior design brands coming together for the show. Travelling all the way from Ahmedabad is interior designer Ariana Thakore’s 10-year-old brand this & that, which specialises in handmade furniture designed by local artisans, displaying intricate regional designs. Adding diversity will be Delhi-based Parmindar Pal Singh’s Taamaa, who works on quirky and minimal accessories, and even brings in unique takes on traditional board games! It gets better as Mumbai-based Alok Nanda’s Filter, The Shop will showcase their quirky stationery with hilarious prints while Aziz Kachwala’s Mumbai-based At-tin Studio gets industrial design-inspired furniture, lounges and lamps to the table.

As for the categories of design — look out for a range from regional to contemporary expressions, as well as a smattering of vintage pieces. Some of the highlights include embroidery in woodwork to use on coffee tables and lamps (Gunava Designs) to pouffe chairs (Taamaa) and even and even a golden poodle table lamp (Bent Chair)!

Faces, places...
However, the exhibition is not going to be all about design and interior products, as it will also have artists Medha Khanna, Brijesh Devareddy and illustration studio Cloud Sky to keep enthusiasts on their toes. While Medha will display her series Daimi (Endless), which is a collection of hand-drawn one-line faces reflecting the ever-changing flow of nature, monochrome artist Brijesh will display works on everything from shoe boxes to refrigerators. On the other hand, Cloud Sky will have artwork inspired by urban India as well as limited-edition prints on society and culture, giving visitors more than one reason to amp up their homes.

Starts today. On till March 23.
At The Folly, Amethyst. 10 am - 8 pm.
