Taiwanese 'Bikini Hiker' Gigi Wu freezes to death after falling down a ravine in Yushan mountain

The hiker reportedly made a distress call to a friend eight days into a hike after she fell more than 20 metres into a ravine and her injuries had made it difficult for her to move.

 A Taiwanese hiker who gained popularity for climbing mountains in dressed in a bikini has reportedly frozen to death after getting into an accident while climbing the Yushan mountain. Popularly known as the ‘bikini hiker’, Gigi Wu has been climbing mountains for the longest time, and because of her unique gear, she got a lot of followers on social media, however, her most recent climb turned out to be fatal. 

The 36-year-old hiker set out on a solo hike on January 11 in the Yushan National Park, faced a tough situation even though she has climbed several mountains over the years, and 130 days alone in 2018. The hiker reportedly made a distress call to a friend eight days into a hike after she fell more than 20 metres into a ravine and her injuries had made it difficult for her to move. According to the Nantou County Fire Department, Wu made the call from a height of 5.577 feet and the temperature recorded there is as low as 2 degree celsius. However, as soon as her friend contacted the emergency services, the Taiwanese National Airborne Service Corps immediately sent a rescue team to the hiker but could not save her in time. 

While the efforts by the airborne services failed, the government soon sent the fire department and her body was found 28 hours after the call, after two failed attempts due to bad weather. Wu’s followers paid a touching tribute to the hiker as they thanked her for showing the world, the beauty of Taiwan.
