Epic games has delivered the ultimate cliffhanger as millions of gamers found themselves staring at nothing but a black hole on their screens.

On friday, Epic set hearts aflutter, tweeting out a vague message of "the end is near", followed by "this is the end", with a picture of the gaming characters bidding farewell to the party bus. True to their word, the gamers were met with radio silence as both the game, it's website and the twitter account went completely blank, only displaying a twitch live stream of the black hole.

The in-game event featured the explosion of the static meteor that's been on the map since the beginning of season X, sucking virtually the entire Fortnite map into it. As many have turned to making memes in the extended downtime, those who hadn't tuned into the event found themselves locked out.

As some gamers sombrely gaze into their screens waiting for any movement, others have made their peace with the end.

Rumours have been aswirl for some time now about a new map but it's unclear yet of how big of a change it will be. Fortnite's updates in season X were met with a lot of criticism and if Epic pulls this major upheavel off, they could set right the wrong. The blackout could mark the beginning of a whole new chapter and a whole new map in the game.
