Hosting an open mic as a debut for their event organising firm called Papercup was part of a bigger plan for co-founders Sanjay Sundar and Aparna Thankaraj.

“Kochi is used to the format of such gatherings. So, organising one was a convenient way to let people know that our venues are happening places. Now, we’re planning to give a touch of social responsibility to open mics,” says Sanjay, as their sophomore event is set to be held with a pride theme.

Named Kochi In Love, the gathering is touted as the first of its kind in the state—announcing support for the LGBTQIA+ community.

Rainbow theory
The duo’s attempt at inclusivity comes at an apt time as an independent musician was recently heard complaining about the politically incorrect and exclusive nature of similar events around town.

“Open mics have become a platform for socialising for the city’s young crowd who can’t hit bars for events. So, we’re trying to raise some awareness against homophobia and empower our diverse
LGBTQIA+ population,” informs the co-organiser. Even with this agenda, he adds that the event is not just for queer performers.

While, their previous event featured experienced performers like singer Kasthoori Mohan (known for her presence in television reality shows), this time they’ve also reserved slots to raise some awareness.

“Entertainment is guaranteed at Kochi In Love. But, alongside that, we’ll have three activists from the queer community who will communicate to the crowd through performances and interactive sessions,” says the 24-year-old. While they look forward to people dressed in vibrant rainbow colours to present music, dance, poetry, art and more with queer undertones, the stage is open to any creative output.

The duo is also planning to diversify into organising an indie music show next month and are on the lookout for new artistes to feature.

From 4.30 pm.
On September 21.
At Plug N Play, Edappally.
