Domestic automobile manufacturer Mahindra has made a bold move by stepping into the luxury SUV market. The debut product has been sourced from the Korean brand SsangYong, which is incidentally owned by the aforementioned company. In doing so, the latter has become the first Indian manufacturer to step into the luxury car market. Known globally as the SsangYong Rexton G4, the Indian version of the high-end vehicle has been christened as the Alturas G4.

Touch of class
The SUV carries an imposing design thanks to the large HID headlamps, big chrome grille and sporty stance. It is a wide vehicle that sits high and looks ready to take on any terrain thrown at it. The cabin boasts an upmarket finish and uses a combination of tan and black materials to bring out that luxurious look. Quilted Nappa leather has generously been used on the dash as well as the seats, and the fit and finish are commendable. You also get a sunroof, memory seats, a large touchscreen infotainment system, a 3D surround view camera and a top-tier sound system as well. While it does offer three rows of seats, the third row doesn’t offer space for adults. It does, however, offer oodles of luggage space.

The vehicle is powered by a 2.2-litre, a 4-cylinder diesel engine that delivers 178 bhp and 420 Nm of torque. It is paired with a Mercedes-Benz sourced 7-speed automatic transmission and is available in two variants, namely a 4x2 and a 4x4 version. Safety features include nine airbags, ESP, Hill Start Assist, traction control, and active rollover protection. Mahindra has managed to price the Alturas G4 rather well.
The 4x2 variant is priced at `26.95 lakh, while the 4x4 version will retail at `29.95 lakh.
