Chester Bennington, the lead singer of American alternative metal band Linkin Park, was found dead at his home in Los Angeles. Law enforcement officials suspect the cause of death to be suicide by hanging. Bennington, who inspired an entire generation with his music, was 41.

The Grammy award-winning ensemble—who are currently touring North America to promote their seventh studio album One More Light—have expressed their grief online. Bandmate Mike Shinoda tweeted, "Shocked and heartbroken, but it's true. An official statement will come out as soon as we have one."

Linkin Park released their first album, Hybrid Theory in October of 2000. Its inspiration came from Bennington's troubled adolescence and family issues. Songs such as One Step Closer, In The End and Crawling were instant hits, and helped millions of youngsters deal with anxiety and depression as the tracks revolved around themes of pain and suffering. Their follow-up release Meteora gave us immensely popular tracks such as Numb, Somewhere I Belong and Breaking the Habit. Yet all this early success had pushed the frontman into addiction. But the Arizona native, who was always very vocal about his struggles with alcohol and drug abuse, had been sober since the late 2000s.

Bennington recently lost his friend, musician Chris Cornell, to suicide in May this year. Bennington's suicide also happens to coincide with what would have been Cornell's 53rd birthday.

He is survived by his wife Talinda Bentley and six children.
