The Humming Tree

Nikhil Barua (34) started The Humming Tree four years ago with an aim to showcase local talent which was going unnoticed. “It has actually been surreal. Last year, we had about 520 artistes perform at the venue,” he says about the journey so far, humbly adding, “I think more than anything, it’s testament to the amount of talent and material out there.”

As the venue turns four, they have planned a whole weekend of events, with some of their favourite artistes and bands descending on Bengaluru for performances as part of the three-day celebrations. Mumbai-based Madboy will launch his new EP, Dream Delite. Bands F16, Your Chin, Parvaaz, Prateek Kuhad, Donn Bhat + Passenger Revelator will also take the stage. The venue will also host food pop-ups, THT Trivia Quiz and stalls selling artiste merchandise.

The event will be in support of local charities, The Baale Mane Gopalapura (who aim to eradicate child labour) and Enablers United (who work towards the welfare of animals, the environment and people). “We are very serious about supporting local charities and NGOs. We think it’s easier when you have a space like this and you can promote the cause through music,” he says.

When asked about their plans for the next few years, Nikhil reveals that they aspire to take The Humming Tree to Mumbai and Delhi. “We also want to get more international artistes to tour India and take local artistes on tour,” he signs off optimistically.
