We catch up with the ‘first lady of grime’ Lady Leshurr before her India tour
"Hopefully when I am there, I could get into the studio with one of the rappers supporting me on tour," says the 28-year-old
Lady Leshurr doesn’t know what to expect from her India tour, “I don’t even know if people are going to turn up. All I know is that it’s going to be an amazing trip. And I think I am going to love it.” The 28-year-old is currently UK’s hottest rapper and she performs live in Bengaluru tonight for the Bira 91 FreeFlow event.
Lady Leshurr aka Melesha O’Garro started writing rhymes at the age of six. “I just wanted to be a rapper! I never told anyone that I was going to be a rapper,” says the artiste who released her first mixtape at the age of 14. Her Queen’s Speech freestyle series on YouTube is a slice of what she does best — quick witty rap with cultural commentary. “I used to watch a lot of battle rap videos and think ‘why aren’t they signed
by someone’ because a lot of them are really incredible. That was one of the ideas behind Queen’s Speech. I thought about doing a freestyle with actual song, melody. I call it banter battle rap!” she explains.
In the latest Queen’s Speech Episode 7 video, she rides a camel down the highway while rapping. “It’s really difficult to find a camel in London! I just wanted to try something different. I wanted to confuse people. I wanted to get that reaction,” says the rapper who is based out of Birmingham.
At the gig tonight she is supported by Delhi-based rapper Prabh Deep, and city-based audio-visual act Aerate Sound. “Not a lot of artistes have an opportunity to tour India. Hopefully when I am there, I could get into the studio with one of the rappers supporting me on the tour,” she shares. In the near future, fans can expect a new rap project and even an album.
