Chennai band Wacx set to release debut EP

One of Chennai’s newest bands is set to release their debut EP

The story of city-based hard rock/punk band Wacx is the classic case of experienced musicians coming together to start something new. Launched in 2016, when they made their debut at Savera Hotel’s Bay 146, the five-piece band comprises of musicians who were already active members of other bands before joining hands. Therefore, “Traces of other bands definitely leak into Wacx’s music, but that is a good thing. Imitation is the greatest form of flattery, or so they say,” says bassist Jitesh James Dharmaraj, who is also one of the founding members of alternative funk rock band Junkyard Groove. Wacx releases their debut EP, Scramble, today. The six-track album has been in the works for quite a while, and the band is going all out to promote it, by organising a countrywide tour.

Steering clear of clichéd themes like love and destruction, the songs of Scramble are inspired by everyday situations faced by people. “Listeners will be able to relate to it, at the same time interpret it in their own way,” says Jitesh.

To be released digitally, the songs were recorded at Krimson Avenue Studios. “The music is along the lines of alternative rock with elements of punk and hard rock. From the word go, we just stuck to what came naturally to us individually. So when you put five guys with similar tastes in music and their individual quirks, it sort of fuses together without too many issues,” explains Jitesh, who was joined by Ashwath Nair (vocals), Brian Paiva (vocals/guitar), Vijay Krishnan (guitar) and drummer Preetham Dev Moses in this project. The quintet, aged from the late-20s to mid -30s, will perform again at Bay 146 next month, as a part of the promotional tour.

Album releases today. The band performs on February 9. Tickets available with the band. Updates on their Facebook page.
