Kerala floods: Here's how much celebs have donated to help the flood victims 

Celebrities across the country have made contributions to the relief efforts while encouraging their fans to do the same.

Over one million people are now sheltered in more than 3,000 relief camps in Kerala, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Monday, even as the floods killed 387 people. The Chief Minister has requested people to make generous contributions towards the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund. Meanwhile, celebrities from across the country have made their donations to help the state fight floods. Malayalam industry’s superstars, Mohanlal and Mamoothy, donated Rs 25 lakh each towards the relief fund. According to reports, the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) have given Rs 50 lakh in two instalments to the chief minister. Actor Tovino Thomas reportedly announced that victims can stay in his house, where he will also provide basic necessitates for them until everything comes under control.

Rang De Basanti actor Siddharth played an active role during the 2015 Chennai floods and this time, he proved himself again by starting a social media challenge to encourage people to make monetary contributions for Kerala. He posted on his Twitter account saying: “I implore you to contribute whatever you can to this urgent cause. Please post your donation proof online if you wish to inspire others to do the same. Let us call this the #KeralaDonationChallenge. We all know how much the internet loves a challenge.” He also attached a picture of a bank letter making Rs 10 lakh donation. Apart from Siddharth, other Tamil actors including Kamal Hassan, Suriya-Karthi and Vijay Sethupathi too made their contribution of Rs 25 lakh, while Dhanush donated 10 lakh rupees.

Tollywood stars too have stepped forward and donated to the relief fund. Superstar Mahesh Babu, Allu Arjun, Ram Charan and Chiranjeevi have contributed Rs 25 lakh, while Vijay Deverakonda announced 10 lakh rupees, also asking his fans (whom he calls Rowdies) to donate for the cause.

On the other end, Bollywood has stars have tweeted expressing their sympathy towards the flood victims. Shah Rukh Khan’s Meer Foundation has donated Rs 21 lakh to a relief group working amongst flood victims, while actress Jacqueline committed to donate Rs 5 lakh to NGO Habitat for Humanity India's Kerala Flood Relief Programme. Filmmaker Priyadarshan reportedly handed over his and actor Akshay Kumar's cheque to Kerala Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund.

Kai Po Che actor Sushant Singh Rajput was on Wednesday’s trending list after he donated Rs 1 crore for Kerala on behalf of a fan. The fan tagged the actor in a comment and said: “Sushant Singh Rajput, I don't have money but I want to donate for the flood. How can I donate? Please tell me." Sushant soon responded and wrote that he'll donate in his name and make sure that it reaches to the people in need. Later, Sushant posted a screenshot of his contribution, along with the Instagram conversation he had with the fan. “As promised, my friend, @subhamranjan66, what you wanted to do, has been done. You made me do this, so be extremely proud of yourself. You delivered exactly when it was needed. Lots and lots of love. Fly. Cheers.” Sushant has also changed his profile picture on Twitter to a picture of Kerela map. Gold actor Kunal Kapoor has also raised about Rs. 1.5 crore through his crowdfunding website Ketto. The money will be used to help NGOs and organisations working in Kerala.
