Another year has arrived and with it mages of people getting their acts together and working on ‘bettering’ themselves in one way or another. The fitness freaks have already started posting pics of their new running shoes accompanied by an assortment of hashtags. ‘New me’ this and ‘Fab abs’ that. You get my drift. At this point, we realise its already five days into the New Year and we should quickly get on this ‘Re-invention’ bandwagon ourselves. But before that a quick recap of all the New Year’s Eve madness that led us to this point. Chennai peeps have always had their own unique way of bringing in the New Year and this year wasn’t very different, with everyone falling roughly into the same categories.

Staying in: Quite a few people opted to stay at home and enjoy the countdown to midnight in the company of close friends. So this means no intoxicated people you don’t know, control over the volume of the music, and yes comfy shoes.
Going out:  Call this the ‘Classic’ NYE plan — getting all dressed up, buying tickets to a venue and dancing the night away. The bigger the group, the better. I found myself in this category this year, with us Rao siblings throwing down some serious dance moves. Safe to say I couldn’t feel my feet the next morning. But it was so worth it.

To the hills:  One of my favourite plans, and one that a big chunk of the crowd opted for was a long weekend at one of various hill stations. From Kodai to Ooty and Coonoor, lots of the popular faces traded the usual watering holes for some mulled wine and a spot around the bonfire.
Coast love: Remember those famous Chennai beach house parties? Well, it turns out they still exist. Some of our city ‘young and the restless’ hired their seaside venues of choice and chilled by the pool. Extra points for those with a giant fun shaped pool floaty.

Family fun: As the party animals are getting older, many with little ones of their own, the family-friendly style of entertainment also saw many takers. It was a similar vibe at  Arjun Kanungo’s concert at Forum Mall, along with a special performance by rapper Mellow D. The teenyboppers definitely had a blast. So here’s a fab New Year and lots of fun in 2018!
