Bengaluru, which is fast gaining the tag of being the fitness capital of India, is introduced to another new sport. Cardio Tennis, an outdoor, group, cardio activity, was recently launched by ace tennis player Rohan Bopanna.

Though cardio activities like running, Zumba, kick-boxing and step workouts have been popular in the fitness community, people are combining various regimens to get the best out of a workout. Those who are aware of Cardio Tennis, that’s quite popular in the US and European countries, will know this is one of the most intense yet easy-to-adapt cardio workouts. But how different is it from tennis? “In the game of tennis, each player competes against an equally capable opponent and it’s all about winning. Whereas in Cardio Tennis, there is no such pressure. Participants play against the trainer. There is no rallying around the court,” explains Rohan.

While the activity isn’t as intense as the actual sport, it involves a variety of drills. So while you hit the ball when thrown at you by the trainer, you move onto doing different drills before the next hit. So between hits and serves you could either do a ladder, side-step or a high knees workout. “While a player is on court, music keeps playing in the background to calm the player.

There is a list of about 50 drills, so every day the players try new drills between the hits and no drill repeats on the same day,’ explains Rohan. But the most interesting fact about Cardio Tennis is that a heart rate monitor is strapped across your chest that is synced with an iPad. The trainer monitors your heart rate while the workout is on, helping you either slow down or increase the pace. So each participant will also know how many calories he or she has burnt. Trainers say, on an average, 500-600 calories are burnt during this one-hour workout. “There are also a lot of functional movements between the hits. Squats and lunges are an integral part, so we like to call it cardio-cum-functional training,” says Rohan.

The only place where the classes are being conducted right now is the KSLTA Club in Cubbon Park. But the sport can be played at any place where there is enough space for a group of maximum 14 players to be involved. All one needs is a pair of tennis shoes. The trainer can set up the nets, and get the rackets and monitor the heart rate whenever needed.

Rs 3,000 for 10 classes. At KSLTA, Cubbon Park
