April is the month of appraisal and it’s not far-fetched for the friendly neighbourhood hawaldar (constable) to dream of becoming a kothwal  (chief police officer) to enjoy more power and action. The slapstick musical comedy Saiyan Bhaye Kothwal discusses these circumstances and other political issues, today at Lamakaan.  Udaan Performing Arts, comprising a bunch of 15 energetic artistes  have put together this satire which is a Hindi translation of the famous Marathi folk play Viccha Majhi  Puri  Kara written by Vasant Sabnis. City-based Saurabh Gharipuikar, the director and founder of Udaan Performing Arts, has done several a theatre workshops since 2008 and has directed around 35 theatrical productions.

“We have done four shows of the same play in and around the city and are also planning to take it to other states to make people familiar with this form of art. This form is known as tamaasha and the play brings out the political undercurrents of  nepotism,” he says. The play revolves around the life of a hawaldar who aspires to become a kothwal. Along with his sweetheart Mainavati, he plots against the present kothwal. Does their plan work? Will the hawaldar become kothwal? The two-hour play features veteran actors such as Sunjith Rao, Krishna Shukla, Sharanjeet Kaur Kedar Subhedar, Ashutosh Patwardhan, and Suresh Kumar. Speaking about his team, the founder says, “We have an experienced team. The actors have been working with Udaan for years. Some of them have their own production house and some also work with other teams around the city.”
