The Madras Players brings a new adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet

LAST year, countries from across the world paid homage to William Shakespeare on the occasion of his 400th death anniversary (April 23), along with the British Council, and groups like Theatre Nisha and the Auroville Theatre Group, closer home. As the date approaches again, The Madras Players have decided to do their bit too, in deference to the Bard. Coming up today at the Museum Theatre, is the group’s latest adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. Directed by city-based thespian Michael Muthu, the play features 25 artistes from the group, including Gibran Osman, Thomas Philip, Yohan Chacko, Sarvesh Sridhar, Namita Krishnamurthy and Gokul Anand, among others.

New-age passion
Set in the modern world, the play stays true to the original premise of the play — that of two lovers whose families are involved in a bitter feud. “It took two months to prepare for this play,” reveals Muthu, who says that the audience can expect the artistes to be clad in contemporary costumes. “One of the main reasons for choosing Romeo and Juliet is because it is one of my favourite plays, and is timeless. I was able to adapt the play in a contemporary setting and still retain the core essence of the original work,” he explains. Once done with this performance, Muthu is planning to stage an adaptation of another of Shakespeare’s classics, Hamlet

March 3-5. At Museum Theatre. 7.15 onwards. Tickets from `200 onwards on in.bookmyshow.com
