Hyderabad’s ace designer Shravan Kummar is a happy man these days. He is just back from showcasing 42 of his designs at the recently concluded Zingbi Mysore Fashion Week Season 5, which took place at Windflower Resort and Spa, Mysuru and all his works were sold out. “That’s the ultimate thumbs up from one’s patrons. That’s amazing. Although the ensembles are sold out, I can certainly create it again, with a bit of variation though, for those who want it,” says the designer. His patrons can refer back to the show for his designs.

Titled A Bygone Era, his designs for both men and women featured a selection of Banarasi weaves in pure silk and zari. “I focused on the time span between 1939 to 1956 and hence the colour palette was also coffee brown (sepia) and blue, two hues that were popular in that era. It was an effort of three years. We took about four months to come up with one sari. To be able to recreate those royal designs calls for a lot of reading, documenting and researching,” Shravan says. Calling himself an ‘R & D designer’ who loves to revisit history and piece together evidence to come up with designs rather than sales and figures, he said his show supported the cause ‘Save a Weaver,’ an initiative by The Aalayam Society, an NGO he chairs. Interestingly, he also had a show at Google’s Hyderabad office earlier this month, and the corporates bought it all.

Not someone to bask in past glory, he is now busy working on intricate Banarasi vintage weaves for his show titled Ray of Light, for cancer patients on March 4, 2019, at Cincinnati in the US. “Cancer patients and their doctors from four states of the US will be there. Besides entrepreneur and fashionista Ivanka Trump, three Hollywood stars are also going to walk the ramp at the event,” he reveals. Weaving a cause in fabric seems to be his signature style.

Price starts at Rs.45,000.
