Resort to white: It’s throwback time for Shades of India

It has been 12 years since Shades of India last put out their all-white collection. While the collection might be a hark back to the Shades and White line of 2005, their latest range titled E’kin aims at more relaxed silhouettes. Designed in light and crushed cotton, the line is hinged on the idea of comfort. “As a resort wear collection, the clothes need to be easy to carry in lightweight luggage. Simplicity and fine detailing are the focus,”shares Mandeep Nagi, design director.

While the colour (or lack thereof) dominates the line, the range introduces a rather subdued element of a surprise — a signature motif of ants; in stark contrast to the shock value that Nagi has previously generated, using a domestic help as the face of her Cinnamon collection last year, for instance, or having girls from Mumbai’s red-light area walk the runway for her Bagh collection at Lakme Fashion Week earlier this year.

Printed individually or in rows, the ants look like minuscule polka dots at first glance. “The inspiration behind this motif is the Bakersfield Voice which tells one that ants are a good omen, and who wouldn’t want that on a holiday!” rallies the New-Delhi based designer with a laugh. Laying emphasis on detailing, the line that includes dresses, drawstring pyjamas, shirts, tops, and skirts, features a range of surface design as pintucks, smocking, pleats, embroidery and crochet trimming on the sleeves.

Weighing in on styling a white and white collection, Mandeep tells us that the E’kin offers a range of accessories including hats, bags, scarves, necklaces and bangles. Look out for drawstring bags with crochet detailing and foil texture, alongside stoles and scarfs with handcrafted zari flowers and silver buds. Known to curate thematically-inspired lines such as the Bagh collection or the Awadh collection (based on the lifestyle of Lucknow royalty), Nagi is now working on a colour-intensive collection for the monsoon season, titled Ufri.
