Ahoy brides-to-be, there’s a new designer destination to shop from as Kolkata-based Saroj Jalan, has unveiled her first design studio here right in the heart of Banjara Hills, also known as ‘design street’. This store is her first outside Kolkata.
Nizami décor
As you walk up to the second floor of Zaib Arcade, you stumble upon a majestic olive green door that resembles the ones you can find in the Old City homes. The corridor is decked up to resemble a Hyderabadi Nizam’s court. Replete with striking chandeliers and vintage trunks, the décor is as splendid as the ensembles on display. “The hand-embroidered Kalighat paintings on the walls and the elements used to decorate the walls are made at in-house workshops,” says Yamini Jalan, assistant director of the label. The décor, much like her designs has a touch of Victorian and traditional Indian designs. You can occasionally also spot a craftsman in the hallway, embroidering on a weave.
Designer on call
The Kolkata-based designer makes fortnightly trips here to meet with her clients. On those occasions, she holds elaborate meetings in the bridal room, which is also designed in sync with vintage aesthetics in mind. A stately mirror and a plush sofa complete the look. “Many of our patrons from Hyderabad would come down to Kolkata to purchase bridal ensembles. We also travelled here for exhibitions and received an overwhelming response. That’s why we wanted to start a store here and started looking for places last November,” says Yamini.
All in one
The 4,000 square feet store houses a prêt as well as a couture section. You can take your pick from the elegant kurtis, lightweight saris and uber glamorous gowns in the ready-to-wear section. The bespoke section has heavier lehengas and saris with zardosi, Lucknowi, kantha, aari and gota patti work. What’s more? It is a one stop shop for brides as apart from the ensembles they can shop for potlis, shoes and clutches as well.
