In the midst of a flurry of pop-ups and exhibitions across the city, designer boutique Evoluzione is set to house celebrity designer Masaba Gupta’s label. Inspired by riotous colours, expect to find a range of pret and festive pieces alongside some of the brand’s bestsellers like draped skirts, layered tunics and drop waist dresses. While her understanding of design is anything but conventional, the 27-year-old, currently based in Mumbai, looks forward to reaching out to a ‘not so experimental’ fashion market in the city. “I think Chennai, in the past, has always played quite safe when it comes to fashion. However, over the years, buyers have started to move towards more experimental pieces. With the expanding market, I think it’s the right time to bring my quirk into play.”

True to character
While Masaba’s denim sari for Sonam Kapoor last month was the talk to the town, she seems to be using the same philosophy in her collection for the city. “A play on the traditional and contemporary, the line is extremely versatile with shift dresses, button-down skirts with bow tops, wide-legged denims paired with crisp shirts or breezy tunics and the quintessential one shoulders,” says Masaba. While pushing the envelope with her sartorial sensibilities, the designer tries to strike a balance throughout her collection. “It is always a fine line that you tread and balance is something that I’ve always had in mind while creating anything, be it prints or garments. As long as I maintain the aesthetic of my collection, I will keep pushing myself,” she shares. Also find a range of easy festive pieces like layered tunics paired with culottes, neoprene lehengas, high-low anarkalis and capes paired with flared skirts in rich charmeuse satin, block printed velvet and fine flush silks.

Colour pop
Ask her what the big trends to look out for this year are and Masaba’s vote goes to pink, aqua, ochre, deep red, grey and tints of gold and silver in light-weight cottons, denims, khaki with layers of neoprene and plush silks. Having recently launched an athleisure line with Koovs, the young designer is tight-lipped on her next projects, but assures us that we’ll be hearing from her soon.
