We’ve heard of customised tees, but pencils? UniQBees gives stationery a personality makeover

Now customers can pick a piece of art or pattern and get it customised onto a backpack or notebook or even a piece of stationery like a pencil or eraser. And all in a matter of a couple of hours

While online purchases are convenient, they cannot beat the instant gratification offered by brick and mortar establishments. This was reinforced for Pandian Annamalai when last year, a night before his daughters’ birthday, he found himself scrambling for something special for them. It was too late to make an online purchase and he didn’t want to resort to a run-of-the-mill gift. The Chennai-based entrepreneur converted his predicament into an idea – and took his online site, UniQBees’ and set it up as a concept store.

“When you’re fighting against time and trying to order something, online just doesn’t cut it. Especially since all orders take at least 24-48 hours to ship.” Now customers can pick a particular piece of art or pattern and get it customised onto a backpack or notebook or even a piece of stationery like a pencil or eraser. And all in a matter of a couple of hours.

From geometric patterns and quotes from your favourite TV shows, to letter art or even your own name, UniQBees has a design something to suit all your tastes and preferences. “Unlike competing e-commerce portals that are in the same market segment, we are the only store that personalises stationery like pens and pencils. Our artwork is designed in-house, in a facility that is on the same premises as the store.”

Housed in a 1,200 sq feet store, the plain ivory walls are offset by the colours of the graphic tees, picture frames, stationery and phone covers, each divided into their own section, interspersed with other products like wall art and decals. The store houses a kiosk where customers can pick and preview designs on products. They also facilitate creating caricatures, 3D miniatures and other print-on-demand services.

While the outlet in the city is the eight-month-old e-commerce site’s first brick and mortar store, the CEO of the enterprise says that a facility is set to come up in Bengaluru within the next couple of months. “Besides setting up the store, we are also looking to partner with independent artists to expand our database of art,” he says.

The store, which had its soft launch during the week, will open on May 29. UniQBees also retails on amazon.com, flipkart.com and uniqbees.in.
