Expect terrarium jewellery and accessories from this Bengaluru label
On offer are reindeer moss bracelets, pendants, rings and more
IF you are of the opinion that terrariums are best kept in your garden or on your coffee table, 25-year-old Supriya Donthi is here to make you rethink that notion. Supriya’s passion for gardening (she and her mother maintain a terrace and outdoor garden at their home in Basavanagudi) saw her introducing the concept of terrarium jewellery to Bengaluru. “I came across a terrarium accessory online and wanted to buy it immediately. But I couldn’t find it anywhere in India. So I decided to make one. One thing led to another and my label Leafy Affair was born,” says Supriya, a former corporate employee.
Currently retailing online, Leafy Affair offers necklaces, bracelets, earrings, bookmarks, rings and cufflinks. Supriya works mainly with preserved reindeer moss and dandelion seeds, and sometimes with pressed flowers. Her miniature glass bottles that hold the terrariums are sourced from within the country, while the moss is imported from places such as Russia and the UK. The glass accessories are truly works of art, with organically dyed moss of multiple hues creating a spectacular effect. The bottles are often paired with intricately carved metal in bookmarks and earrings or with metallic charms in bracelets.
The unisex bracelets featuring a handblown tube glass that encases bright green reindeer moss is one of the hot picks from the current collection. The glass tube is screwed shut on both sides and attached to a plain brown cord. “The moss, on close inspection, looks like reindeer antlers. That’s where it gets its name. Also, reindeer feed on this particular type of moss,” explains the designer. Another favourite is the Enchanted Fairy Dust necklace which has dandelion seeds in a glass globe.
By next week, Leafy Affair will retail out of Meraki, a boutique celebrating artisanal products, set to open in Indira Nagar.
