Handcrafted Cubano, Banh Mi and more at Candice’s Gourmet Sandwiches

Made with sourdough, the sandwiches are picked from favourite recipes across the globe

Sandwiches are usually basic, simple and something you can whip up in under five minutes. But at Candice’s Gourmet Sandwiches, they’re anything but. Started by the family behind Mexican restaurant chain, Chinita, it is a sandwich-only delivery service, with a cloud kitchen in Indira Nagar. “Having lived in the US for years, we got used to their gourmet sandwiches, some of which have a cult following. We wanted to recreate that here and satisfy our own cravings as well,” shares Sameer Mirchandani, one of the partners.

The menu is conceptualised by chef Candice Lock, Sameer’s sister-in-law. “We have seven sandwiches, each picked from different parts of the world. And each one has a story to tell,” explains Candice. The Prawns Po’Boy, with roots in Louisiana, USA is the first sandwich we sample. Candice’s version features adobo-marinated and grilled shrimp, instead of the traditional deep fried variant. Lettuce, tomato, homemade remoulade, fermented pickles, and sourdough bread (sourced from a local baker) complete the dish. Light and tangy, this is great for a hot afternoon.

The Cuban, their take on the popular Cubano, features roast pork, a layer of ham, mozzarella, fermented pickles and mustard. The sour notes from the pickles and sourdough serve to cut through the heaviness of this utterly decadent option. A summer must-try is the Vietnamese Tofu Banh Mi, which is made with lemongrass-marinated tofu, pickled radish and carrot, jalapeno, cucumber, cilantro, ginger scallion oil, sriracha and house mayo. We love the distinct Asian flavours that pack a punch, in this one. With a focus on execution, clean flavours, fresh produce and premium ingredients, we’d be surprised if Candice’s Gourmet Sandwiches, doesn’t have its own cult following very soon.
