While pan-Asian may have been the flavour of the season a few years ago and flooded the market with restaurants, a vegetarian pan-Asian restaurant is still a novelty. Started by the couple that own the Vietnamese restaurant Hanoi in Koramangala, Patio 805 in Jayanagar promises authentic Asian recipes, but in a vegetarian avatar.

We were hosted for lunch by owner Nirav Rajani. As he told us tales of his time in Vietnam with his Vietnamese wife Diep Vu Ngoc and her family, Nirav’s love for the country and its culture was evident. Since  he hails from a vegetarian Gujarati family, he realised the gap in the market when it comes to vegetarian Asian food.

The first course served was the soup. We tried one clear — Thai Lemongrass and one creamy — Tom Kha Gai. While the former boasted fresh flavours, the latter was rich with sour and spicy notes. Next on the table was the Bún Bo Nam Bo. A staple from South Vietnam, the piquant salad is made of rice noodles, veggies and marinated in famous Nuoc Mam sauce. The restaurant has many Asian appetisers, ranging from the usual Chinese options to some interesting Thai and Vietnamese ones. Our favourite starter was the Vegetable Skewers On Sugarcane Sticks — a mince of cabbage and veggies fried on a sugarcane stick. Once you’re done eating, you can also nibble on the syrupy stem.

For mains, we tried their signature Vietnamese Curry. The hearty vegan curry has a subtly spiced coconut gravy that pairs well with their Coconut Rice. Another good choice would be their Hot Pots. A simmering pot of broth is cooked on a hot plate on the table in which you can place your ingredients of choice. You can choose from the Vietnamese style, Thai style or the Korean Kimchi style (the kimchi is made in-house).

At Patio 805, you can end your meal with homemade ice cream or even waffles. But we suggest their coffee. We were treated to the traditional Vietnamese Filter Coffee. The coffee, imported from Vietnam, has a dark, strong flavour. Served with condensed milk, it’s certainly a delight and a great note to end the meal on. With its diverse spread and authentic taste, Patio 805 is a great option for vegetarians who are fans of Asian food.

Rs. 1,000 for two. At Jayanagar
