Belgian Curacao orange peel, German malt, European hops and Indian organic coriander — these are some of the ingredients that go into the making of a White Rhino beer. The brand, after establishing itself in the North Indian markets and even the UK and Nepal, launches in Bengaluru. We speak to the founder Ishaan Puri about what the brand has in store for Bengaluru:

What are you expecting from the market in Bengaluru?
The market is quite evolved. Bengaluru has some of the country’s best brewpubs that have done
a terrific job of educating customers and creating demand for styles besides just wheat beer.

Why the name White Rhino?
The white rhino is a symbol of rarity and we felt it distinguished us as a brand that stays true to the craft.

Tell us about the brewery.
Our brewery is located just outside Gwalior. Each style of beer follows a different process, but the quality of ingredients and the attention to detail are the same.

What goes into the making of the beers?
Our malt is imported from Germany, and our hops come from a few sources in the US and Europe. For our Witbier, we add organic Indian coriander, which imparts a subtlety that you don’t get with
other varieties, and we also use Curacao orange peel  from Belgium.

Tell us a little about the beers on offer.
We currently offer three beers — a Belgian witbier, Munich lager (Helles) and an IPA (India Pale Ale). It’s a very well-rounded portfolio because there’s something in it for everyone. The wit is a balanced
and refreshing Belgian-style beer while the lager is a clean, crisp beer brewed in the German tradition with 100 per cent Pilsner malt. The IPA has subtle tropical and floral notes, and a clean bitter finish.

What sets it apart from other brands in the market?
We don’t try to target mass-market price levels, and this enables us to actually select the best kind of malt, hops and spices for all of our beers. We don’t add aroma extracts, or resort to these kind of cost-
cutting measures.
