This former VJ is helping breastfeeding mothers in India with her 'lactation cookies'
Um, could you say that again?
That was our first reaction the first time we heard the term 'lactation cookies'. For those who aren't mothers and possibly are hearing about this for the first time - lactation cookies basically help increase your milk supply.
No, they do not contain any breast milk if you were to come to that assumption because of their name. And yes, they taste delicious...
Usha Seetharam who many may recognise from her stint as a VJ on television over a decade ago tells us that she used them for not one but two pregnancies. "And I definitely noticed a marked difference when I ate them," says the 39-year-old who is based in Chennai.
Although she has been baking under her brand Ushbakeistan ever since 2012, alongside a career in corporate relations - it wasn't until earlier this year that she started her account Make More Milk Cookies on Instagram, which put the word out to breastfeeding mothers, that there was such an option available in India, just a few clicks away.
When to eat:
- Best had five hours prior to your required boost in milk supply, while breastfeeding or pumping.
- Eat one to three per day depending on your baby's need.
- Have with a tall glass of water for maximum benefits
Here are what makes these cookies special — galactagogues. That tongue twister is a fancy word for milk boosting ingredients. Usha tells us that the primary one is brewer's yeast, while the others include, flaxseed, rolled oats and fenugreek. And to make this snack even more healthy, she adds, "These cookies use no refined ingredients or sugars and are gluten-free." We did enjoy a generous chunk of artisanal dark chocolate in our first bite though, which definitely make them an easy swap for dessert.
This is possibly why one of the most common questions Usha gets is a startled: 'My husband just ate three. What should we do?' To which she usually responds, with a laugh, "There are no side effects, don't worry about it! Anyone can eat these, including your kids."
A jar of eight cookies is priced at INR 400. Orders on request. Available across India (courier charges apply).
