Drunken Monkey, the smoothie bar chain that has the whole country drinking healthy, recently opened its first outlet in Kochi. With everything from fresh fruit combinations, vegetable and meal smoothies to healthy snacks, this beverage brand is advocating a healthy lifestyle—away from carbonated drinks. With both interior and al fresco seating and minimalistic interiors, this outlet is also a great place to hang out. “People always opt for tea and coffee, or milkshakes and juices with sugar and additives while eating out. Drunken Monkey is reinventing smoothies as a cool replacement to these, one that helps your body,” says 34-year-old Samrat Reddy, the founder of the pan-Indian brand.

Real refreshing
The elaborate, illustrated menu is one of the first things to grab your attention. Apart from containing a
multitude of smoothie options, it also depicts the story of an adventurous monkey who wants to take the world back to a ‘natural high,’ as their tagline suggests. Everything served here is made in-house. Quality fruits are handpicked and procured and each bottle is prepared with no added sugar or additives. The sweetness is achieved entirely from organic essence, according to Hari Subash who owns this particular franchise on Jawahar Nagar Ave, Kadavanthra. Our tasting begins with a ‘sexy spinach smoothie’ made from green grapes, spinach, mint, cucumber, and lime. You could hate spinach and still love this sweet and sour drink that is a perfect zero-fat snack. The ‘watermelon lime electrolyte’ with mint, lemon and electrolytes is light and refreshing enough for you to down an entire bottle on a sunny day or after hitting the gym.

For all occasions
Next on the table is a ‘Horlicks meal smoothie’ rich in vitamins and dietary fibre. Except for the occasional crunch of nuts, it gives out the familiar flavour of Horlicks and diary with ample sweetness. Everything from cereals to avocados goes into the making of meal smoothies, which according to research published in the British Medical Journal is a great way to lose weight. Another useful pick is the range of detox drinks that can cure any bad hangover. We try the ‘smooth criminal’ next, which hits you with an intense mint flavour, followed by a subtle taste of cucumber. The ‘Irish cream coffee smoothie’ that melts in your mouth with its rich flavour is a perfect, guilt-free indulgence for your sweet tooth.
