A few years back, the final course of an average Kochiite’s meal was two scoops of ice cream. At most, daring folk paired two different flavours in a bowl. Walking into the new Frozen Bottle outlet in Coastal Chambers, Ravipuram I realise how the city’s sweet tooth has evolved. Going beyond the takeaway concept, this Bengaluru-based brand’s first name bearer in Kerala is a 700 sqft, 30-cover space designed like a café.

“The state’s climate is either rainy or humid and hot. So, we decided to have a dine-in space where people can let their body cool down before their order reaches the table,” says Shailesh Nair, one of the directors of the regional franchise, about their small tables and cushioned metal couches. I ask them for tasting suggestions from the two-page menu which sports an extensive collection of shakes, stone/cake jars and the latest addition, waffles.

Dessert drive
A sudden clatter drowns the popular Bollywood numbers blaring from the in-house speakers and I’m told that a stone jar dessert is being made. The Freaky Nutella leaves behind an aftertaste of the granuled chocolate brownie which is blended with ice cream by hand on a stone.

“Our highlights are that we are 100 per cent vegetarian and we even have sugar-free shakes,” Shailesh unveils their USP, as I try a red riding hood, featuring eggless red velvet cake and ice cream topped with marmalade, making it a fun spoonful; texturally. If you’ve kids, definitely get them a waffle stick which comes slathered with choices like white chocolate.

To wash everything down, my last pick is nutty chocolate shake, which wouldn’t compete with others in the market on thickness but its darker chocolate flavour is appealing to my palate.
