Tucked away in a relatively quiet corner of T Nagar is Despiwich, a café that is themed around the film Despicable Me. And no points for guessing what their speciality is — sandwiches. Run by 25-year-old Mahish Raj and his brother 21-year-old Monish, this ‘start-up’ as they prefer to call it, has a modest cover of 15 and is only one-and-a half months old. Work is already underway for an outlet in Bangalore, informs Mahish, as we take our seats.
The brothers’ love for minions does shine through, albeit sounding a little OTT. An array
of merchandise is available for sale at the counter, and those who love minions as much as these siblings do can buy pencils and pens to pouches and even figurines. Printed stickers of the minions Kevin, Bob and Stuart (from the film) adorn the walls of the café and beam down upon you as you wait for your sandwiches to arrive. Mahish says, “We’ve themed our menu according to the characters — so there’s Bob’s special which are paneer-based sandwiches, Kevin special which is corn-based, Stuart special for mushroom-based ones and finally, Gru for chicken sandwiches.”
With knives and forks unavailable here, you have to eat with your hands, which really is the best way, considering the menu is replete with all kinds of finger food like nuggets, fries and burgers. We happily bite into some cheesy Bob’s special sandwiches, conveniently cut into four triangles — definitely finger food, we agree. However, it was the pizza sandwich that was our favourite, with the bread forming the base, filling on the inside and topped off with cheese. As we sip on our tall glasses of orange Tang, Mahish points out that all their veg dishes are served in yellow cutlery, while the non-veg ones are in black (again Minion’s colour scheme). For dessert, there’s a finger-lickin’ good chocolate sandwich that we loved.
