Despite new restaurants popping up every other day, the success stories of home bakers underline the city’s love for home-made goodies.

La Madeleine

On graduating from The Academy of Pastry Art, New-Delhi, 38-year-old home maker, Viji Anandan set up her first home business. In less than two years, La Madeleine, the home brand has become the city’s favorite for French pastries.  Their signature bakes include Éclairs, the classic opera cake, strawberry fraisier pastry and financiers (the French almond cake). “Once we got in to serious business, I too learned baking in order to help her”, says K. “Bake a cake, that's the easiest way to make people happy,” says 24-year-old Sahana Lakshmi, a self taught baker and owner of her one year old home bakery, Lavish. Custom-made cakes, cup cakes and cake pops being her popular bakes, this business school graduate says her interest lies in making breads and loaf cakes. She credits her brand’s huge popularity to word-of-mouth referrals. Her future plan is to develop a complete dessert table with cookies, candies and macaroons. Rs. 1200 onwards. Details: 085249 78388

Niranjana Ashok is one of those hobbyists turned professionals. “I have always loved baking and I was pushed by my friends and relatives to start a business, says Niranjana. Apart from cakes and cupcakes, the bakes offered at Cake o' clock, her one-year old home brand include brownies and cookies. The chocolate mud cake is the fast mover but her personal favorite remains the caramel and butterscotch cake. “I never forget to upload the pictures of my sculpted cakes and cookies in the Facebook page,” says the 24-year old science graduate who is currently working

Sugar crust

Novelty treats like the Gulab jamun cupcakes were Sruthy Ramgopal’s first attempt in creating fusion desserts, an idea that was well recieved. Sruthy, a dessert addict herself is a self taught baker and started her home bakery, Sugar Crust, a year and a half ago. “I love experimenting, especially with flavours”, says Sruthy who admits that on a regular basis she gets frequent orders for themed party cakes like superhero birthday cakes and designer wedding cakes. Passionate about making chilled desserts, she says her classic cheese cakes are the best.
