We are loving the Iyer on Fire food festival at Southindies

Cheekily Chettinad
Cheekily Chettinad

The Karaikudi region in the Sivaganga district in Tamil Nadu may have a small population, but is the heartland of Chettinad culture.  This heritage town has palaces and temples, but is probably most famous for its cuisine. Chef Manu Nair, at Southindies hosts Iyer on Fire, a festival celebrating the cuisine of the region. We got a sneak peek into the menu.

Located on 100 ft road in Indira Nagar, SouthIndies is very popular for its buffet, so it was a busy afternoon when we visited. From the appetisers section, we tried the Sevagai Molaga Podi Paneer, soft homemade paneer, wrapped in rice noodles and fried till crisp. Few of our recommendations would be the Paccha payir cheese Paniyaram, South Indian dumplings made from green moong gram and the Jackfruit Porichathu, ripe jackfruit fritters. The Nadan Mushroom Bruschetta, had morsels of bread with dry Chettiar spices.

Of curries and kuzhambus
Even though the appetisers disappeared quickly from the table, it was the main course that
impressed us the most. Authentic and delicious, we just could not pick a favourite from the spread that was offered, but the Mambazha Curry was at the top of the list. The ripe mango curry was sweet as well as spicy. The Sodhi, a creamy potato stew cooked in coconut milk and spices was pure comfort food. On the side were some dosas, appams and the Vegetable khuska. The Urulai Chettinad Masala (baby potatoes), and the Karuvepillai poondu kozhambu, a curry leaf and garlic preparation, was the perfect accompaniment to the curd rice we ended our meal with.

Their dessert sections boasts dishes like Elaneer Payasam, Filter Coffee Ice cream, and Malai Paal Kozhukottai. And if you are a traditionalist, finish the experience with their speciality Degree Kaapi, a super strong filter coffee.
