Oreo flavoured kulfis anyone?

When Vinod Menon moved back to Kochi after his life as a Mumbaikar for more than four decades, what he missed  the most was an authentic kulfi outlet. “A person who has  tasted this desi dessert from Mumbai, would remember its creamy texture,” shares the 50-something entrepreneur, elaborating that the key to making a good kulfi depends on the malai and milk content in it. After searching the city for months in his quest for the perfect dessert, Vinod gave up and opened Metro Kulfi, a 15 cover creamery near Changampuzha Park. “I finally realised that the version I’m looking for can only be found in Mumbai, so my products are sourced directly from a facility there,” shares Vinod, whose desserts feature 60 to 70 per cent milk content.

Smitten by their menu, featuring unique flavours like sugar-free kulfis (sweetened with jaggery), we invited ourselves over for a quick sampling session. Abiding by a strict no-preservatives and no eggs policy, all products made available at this two-month old outlet are customisable in categories such as gluten free and more. Our first order at Metro Kulfi, a mildly sweet jackfruit flavoured one comes freckled with almonds and saffron.  Though there are more desi flavours like anjeer on offer, we opted for the oreo variant, which sports a crunchy biscuit-like texture.“Based on the customer feedback and our research, new  flavours  are added  to the menu on a weekly basis,” shares Vinod, who will be opening more outlets across Kochi in the coming months. Having wrapped up our short visit with a zesty serving of jaljeera, we are already planning  on returning to this  little creamery for more.
