Kaya Toast, Iced Milo and more at the Nasi and Mee breakfast

Give the usual eggs and bacon a miss and try these Asian delights this weekend

WE ARE of the opinion that the city is facing a  Sunday breakfast and brunch menu overkill, but the one at Nasi and Mee caught our eye for the traditional Southeast Asian delicacies on offer. While visiting an Asian restaurant for breakfast might seem counterintuitive, the restaurant has some unique dishes on the menu. We woke up uncharastically early on a Sunday morning to give this one a try.

We started with a tall glass of Ice Blended Milo, a popular beverage in Indonesia. Sweet and frosty, one sip of this took us right back to our childhood. If you need more of a kick to wake up in the morning, we recommend the Kopitiam Teh Tarik, which literally translates to pulled tea, a familiar taste for any of us from Kerala. Other drink options include ABC Juice as easy as 1-2-3 (a mix of apple, beetroot and carrot, with a hint of ginger), Green Juice (cucumber, celery and broccoli) and freshly brewed coffee.

Pandan power

After all the sugary goodness we were in the mood for some spicy savoury bites. We ordered the Sambal Cheese Toast, a mix of sambal paste, cheddar and parmesan smeared on crunchy sourdough bread, served with arugula and a wild tomato relish. Also on the table was the Chia Seed Berry Pudding, one of the best we’ve had because of the use of Pandan leaves, coconut milk and gula melaka (palm sugar).

Other recommendations would be the Pandan Coconut Pancakes, served with gula melaka again and the Thai Style Eggs Benedict, so called because of the use of Tom Yum flavours in their Hollandaise sauce. They have Triple Decker Corn Fritters layered with arugula, feta and relish as well. We also tried the trending Smashed Avocado and Feta on Toast — while delicious, we suggest you try some of the more authentic Asian recipes. But the highlight of our meal was certainly the Kaya Toast. Nasi and Mee makes their own Kaya — a traditional coconut and butter spread from Singapore. The rich and creamy spread on the crunchy toast is the perfect start to the day.

This breakfast menu surely sets itself apart from the usual offerings available on Sunday mornings such as traditional South Indian fare or full English spreads. We only hope they extend it beyond their current 11 am closing time.
