Taking the culinary world into a sugar storm is the new monstrous mashup of a drink and dessert, Freakshakes.  Getting on board with this new food trend is a new café in Kompally– Mad  Over Freakshakes.

Saie Molangiri, the founder, shares that it was social media that brought freakshakes to his attention. “I was planning on opening a café that serves some quirky beverages. While I was looking for ideas, I found freakshakes on Instagram and decided to try them,” says the 25-year-old engineering graduate, adding that he tried about 30 kinds of flavours before he opened Mad Over Freakshakes.

For those not familiar with the term, freakshakes are thickshakes topped with cream, cake, sauce and a handful of other sweets thrown in for good measure. The toppings vary from fruits to doughnuts and brownies.

Freakshakes are usually, served in mason jars (350 ml) that look as striking as possible, thanks to the milkshake and toppings. I tried two out of the 10 freakshakes available in the menu. The first, Chocolate Brownie, came in a chocolate coated jar with sprinkles. The base was made with a milkshake and scoops of ice cream blended with brownies that added thickness and flavour. An explosion of chocolate, the shake was crowned with a generous slice of brownie, whipped cream and chocolate sticks.

Next in the queue was the Nutella Freak. The shake came lined with crunchy cookies around the rim of the jar that helped cut through the sweet decadence of the Nutella milkshake. Most of the shakes served in this 20-seater outlet come with a bountiful supply of whipped cream and other toppings depending on the customers’ choice of shakes.

Banana Caramel

Some of the other must-try include Banana Caramel, Choco Peanut Butter and Oh! Strawberry. The eatery also plans to add a low-calorie freakshake in their menu very soon.

Price for two: Rs.250.
