Maria Goretti wants you to know that baking can be a piece of cake

The former VJ has a new show on the telly with recipes from exotic locales all over the world
Maria Goretti wants you to know that baking can be a piece of cake

Former VJ Maria Goretti’s husband used to joke that she should start up a construction company. “My bread would come out of the oven as hard as a rock,” she relates with a laugh. But a decade later after much practice and culinary bootcamp at Tante Marie Culinary Academy in London, Maria is whipping up Italian-inspired baguettes and Australian soda bread with equal élan. “You can tell from my creations in the kitchen that I love to travel,” she tells us. And if this sort of dough-re-mi situation makes your heart sing as much as it does Maria’s — you can catch all of the action on her new show I Want to Bake Free that kickstarted a couple of days ago on Living Foodz.

The 22-minute segment covers a bread, a main course and a dessert rolled in one. And we can’t wait for the Gingerbread House that she has in store for her special Christmas episode. Back home though post a trip through the Shiroli jungle in Karnataka, this mother-of-two tells us that her own Yuletide feast is yet to be planned. “But you know what, I don’t set goals and plan things,” confesses the cookbook author whose debut release  From My Kitchen to Yours incidentally won a Gourmand award in television chef category earlier this year. “Sometimes I am so busy with the kids and the travel and the shooting that I have no time to breathe,” she says. The one thing she does plan consciously are holidays. “I love to travel and when I do, I make an effort to learn about the food wherever I go along the way,” she says.

We can’t wait to see what inspiration she brings back from her next big adventure — a snow leopard trek slated for early next year. In fact, our only question when she brought this up with full excitement was: ‘How do you make sure sure you don’t get eaten?’ which was received with a hearty laugh. For those transported to a white Christmas at the mention of snow, however — look out for a Sugar Snow Globe and the heavily trending Unique Macaron in the coming episode.

Pastry pointers
- Biggest baking mistake?
Picking something overly complicated to start with. Try a plain pound cake.

- Why does a cake become hard?
Too much heat for too long.

- Your last google search about food?
Mille feuille — I’m obsessed.

I Want to Bake Free airs Wednesdays and Thursdays on Living Foodz, at 8 pm.
