Cafe Mustache offers options for snacking and a lavish meal

There’s no better feeling than sitting in a cafe with a cuppa hot chocolate on a rainy day. This is exactly what we do at the two-week-old Cafe Mustache near Vytilla. The rain makes it easy for us to choose a hot drink from their extensive beverage menu—featuring mocktails like mangopaya and kiwista.

“Kochi is known for its connoisseurs of food, and my hometown Thalassery is known for its hospitality. So, I thought it would be apt to start my first venture into food industry here,” says owner Akbar Syam Hajiyarakath, who has previously managed restaurants in Bahrain. A quick glance at the menu also reveals that there are options for mild snacking as well as a sumptuous meal.

Crafting quirk
While Akbar says that most of the people visit the hub for their slow-grilled chicken, the culinary staff serve us their roasted meat with a twist—in a wrap. Stuffed into a soft Kerala parotta, the peppery minced chicken topped with mayonnaise is rightly spiced. “We modelled the space and the menu so that it’s partly a cafe and a restaurant,” says the 25-year-old entrepreneur, as people keep pouring into the 40-cover space furnished with pine wood fixtures and wallpapers.

Though we wait for our chicken steak, what pops up on the spread looks more like chicken drumsticks drenched in barbeque and soy sauces! As we savour on the sweet and sour platter, Akbar brings in a gremolata pasta which is rather dry yet finely doused with white sauce. Their Malabar falooda—filled with local and exotic dry fruits like kiwi—is sure to entice any ice cream lover.
