Dine with a dinosaur at Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom with its jungle theme is sure to take you on a food safari
Dine with a dinosaur at Animal Kingdom

You don’t have to drive out to a forest to experience the hissing of pythons, the squealing of chimpanzees or the chirping of birds. Just head over to Animal Kingdom at Adyar. If you’re going on a weekend, then be prepared to wait despite it being a 101-seater.

First, however, we need to make it past the dinosaur at the door. Once inside, we’re told that this place is in fact run by Prabhakar Sigamony, the man behind Rainforest, one of the earliest themed restaurants in India, opened close to a decade ago. This was before The Rock atAnnaNagar or The Cave at Teynampet, known for their jungle-inspired decor. The set up takes you on a visual ride with cement wall art and robotic moving animals. It did take us a while to spot our hairy neighbour, the gorilla, courtesy the dimly lit ambience.

Go for the classics
With a low-priced buffet, the four-year-old, multi-cuisine menu offers classics like biryani, butter chicken and jalebis for dessert. You can choose either a veg or a non-veg platter, but the choices are more inclined to please the latter. “Mr Prabhakar was intent on making sure that the menu is pocket-friendly and affordable to all sections of people,” says Mahesh, the eatery’s manager.

Buck stops here
The menu might not have newly invented dishes, but the standard items that they serve are just enough to satisfy one’s appetite. Buffets generally have a tendency to load people with starters, but here, they have sizeable portions served at regular intervals, so there is room for the main course and desserts. With sufficient quantities and unlimited servings, the food is definitely worth the money.
