Ice cream cafe from Mumbai, keeps Shenoy Nagar abuzz
Sandwiched between a florist and a snack kiosk along a busy strip of Shenoy Nagar is an all-new ice cream parlour. “Ice cream café,” corrects K Vijaykumar, one of the four partners of Chill Effects, which recently got the master franchise for Tamil Nadu for the Mumbai-based chain, Ice Cream Works. Offering 33 flavours, this brand is a part of the Cream Centre restaurant brand and is the first stand-alone in the city — a cosy outlet of 24-seats.
The partners are from fields as varied as finance, printing and logistics – but the fact that they are friends (and simply because “everyone loves ice cream”) spurred them to start this month-old venture. On their opening day, they sold more than 500 scoops and one of the partners, M Radhakrishnan, notes that patrons often opt for tubs (of nearly four-and-a-half scoops) that is commonly used for home delivery — over the regular and medium-sized cups.
Since caramel, salted or otherwise, has always been a favourite – I readily start with a sample scoop of Goldmine that V Suresh, also a partner, tells me is their fastest moving flavour. Golden and creamy with mixed fruit, it ticks all the boxes. However, the Pink Guava is the surprise winner – because of not only delightful bits of fruit in the mix, but a sprinkle of red chilli powder and chaat masala. The result is a medley of flavours that are familiar, yet delightfully novel when melded. We revel in the sweetness and the strong flavours of other popular options as well like Moti Choor Ladoo, King Mango, Mint Brownie Fudge and Calcutta Meetha Paan – while their sugar-free option is the Date A Nut.
