Cheezling bhel & vendakai mor kuzhambu with a view of Ulsoor Lake
The new menu at the pub takes inspiration from local cuisine
The Ulsoor outlet of Watson’s is a sight to behold on a rainy afternoon, with large open windows offering views of the Ulsoor lake and lush treetops. The pub has been a favourite of Bengalureans for a few years now. For the first time, they have launched a new menu. We visited the pub on a Sunday to try the new offerings.
First on the table, to welcome us, was a spicy but comforting Pepper seafood soup — reminiscent of rasam, the soup is a mix of coriander, curry leaves, prawn and cubes of fish in a tomato broth. Properly warmed up, we selected the Cinnamon twist, a refreshing gin and ginger cocktail from the drinks menu. The Apple chutney salad, an Indian version of the Waldorf salad is light and delicious. The cubes of apple are marinated with yoghurt tempered with mustard seeds and curry leaves. Our favourite from the list though, was the Cheezling bhel — Cheezlings with chopped chilli, tomato, chutney and garnished with sev.
Their finger food, a treat for seafood and meat lovers, is the perfect accompaniment for drinks. The Nethili fry, Kerala-style anchovies and the Crispy masaledar prawns disappeared from the table as soon as they were served and paired well with our second cocktail, the Black On Black — whisky, lemon and black currant. The Andhra gunpowder chicken wings are the highlight on the menu, especially because of the oodles of ghee they are cooked with. Another recommendation, the Kerala beef pepper fry, is cooked in the classic way with coconut and black pepper.
Although we recommend simply having an assortment of starters along with your drinks, should you opt for mains, the menu has that covered as well. We suggest a bowl of Vendakai mor kuzhambu, okra in a spicy yoghurt gravy served with rice. The new menu delivers on comforting classics, just like the pub itself.
