Serving up summer with a new menu at A2, The Park

A2’s new menu turns the heat up with everything from harissa-spiced snapper to a meringue that is flambéd at the table

Under the twinkling stars and over the murmur of Nungambakkam’s peak-hour traffic, blooming onions and bacon-wrapped chilli poppers are our focus at A2, the poolside, rooftop restaurant at The Park, this week. Their new menu promises world cuisine to the discerning, while last year’s sushi lineup has been retained, we are assured.

Food that blooms
We start our meal with two salads — the refreshingly cold Burrata Salad (fresh burrata, arugula, grilled ciabatta, asparagus and olives with balsamic vinegarette) and the fruity Pear and Arugula Salad (pear, arugula, tossed with walnuts in a creamy blue cheese dressing). A2’s Blooming Onion, Chef Rahul Shrivastava’s international take on the humble onion pakoda, makes for the perfect Instagram-worthy, hashtagable picture, and tastes as good as it looks. Vegetarians must also try the Piadina (potato, peppers and goat cheese, rolled in Italian flatbread) which is spicy and creamy in equal measures. The Chicken Caeser tacos, on the other hand, are a tad chewy, and tough to tackle with a knife and fork.

Fishing for compliments
A2’s special sushi platter comes with Tuna Tataki with Truffle Miso, which only packs a punch if you spread your miso on the fish. The Salmon Tartar with Avocado and Soy, meanwhile, makes quite the impression. However, our pick from the menu has to be the perfectly cooked Harissa Fish (red snapper marinated in harissa spice) which comes with an accompaniment of delicious mash (sans lumps) and
sautéed asparagus sticks. The blend of spice on the snapper and the perfect cook of the fish definitely had us hooked.

Flambé flamboyance
What takes the cake (pun intended) is the Baked Alaska Twist. Making a grand entrance, Chef Rahul arrives with a plate of the freshly made berry ice cream between layers of chocolate sponge, encased in a dome of meringue — doused in what smells like Sambuca. A second later, even before we could whip out our phones for a video, the plate is literally on fire. Once the flame dies down, we’re left with a spongy and sludgy dessert with a wonderful smoky aftertaste. If you’re  a dessert lover, take our advice, and eat this one all by yourself.

Meal for two: Rs 1,600+taxes. From 12 to 3 pm and from 7 pm to midnight. Details: 42676000
