No one may miss the eatery called Relish, but Café Kapio is all set to make the same spot a favourite haunt among Kochi’s foodies. Located right behind the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium—a place that legions of Kerala Blasters’ fans call home—on Kaloor Stadium Link Road, it’s apparent that owners Gawin Paul, Arjun J and Elbert Paulson hope to capitalise on the location. Their two-tiered, 54-cover short eats space emits a happy-go-lucky vibe. This is also reflected on their comfort food-filled menu, especially that hearty English breakfast with bacon, toast, eggs, hash browns and black pudding.

While I make quick work of a large BBQ hot dog, as the artisanal sausage had just the right snap to it, Gawin escorts me to a picnic table set above large paved stones in their ‘al-fresco’ area. He points to a soon-to-set-up large projector screen (to livestream matches) and a jamming session platform. “We're still in the trial phase and are close to finding the elusive ‘perfect burger bun’,” he reveals, elaborating, “The idea is to cater to the 4,000 plus homes that live in the surrounding apartments and become a hub for football fans prior to the U-17 FIFA World Cup and ISL 2017.”

Want to go up in Kapio's Hall of Fame? Why not try the 12-minute spicy wings challenge or the 9-minute Bada Baap burger challenge? To top my quick meal, chef Sumesh Nair, who previously worked at Cocoa Tree, brings me his pièce de résistance. Titled the Mother of all Desserts, this over the top chocolate milk shake is overloaded with Ferrero Rocher, wafer sticks, red velvet cake, waffles and whipped cream. If you order this, brace yourselves—‘sugar hangover’ is coming.
