Jugo Cafe: Where superheroes get their burgers

If you ever had a hard time finding a food joint to satiate your hunger pangs after hitting the Velachery road, en route Tambaram, here is good news. Right on the main road at Medavakkam, now stands Jugo Cafe, the two-week-old cozy joint that serves you juices with unusual combinations and food in huge portions.

A bright yellow food counter with Jugo written on top with blingy lights, blue couches, yellow bar stools, a turquoise ceiling and matching table mats. As you walk into this pretty 32-seater, it's a splash of colour. The wall art at the café features Popeye in a lungi to Batman, Superman and Spiderman hanging out together. “The word Jugo means juice in Spanish,” says Ponkarthik P, the café owner as he greets us inside. “The menu here predominantly has juices and milkshakes and the rest of the cafe menu was built around them,” he shares.

Welcoming us inside with Desi Guava, a juice of fresh guava with chilli served in a shot glass along with some garlic bread, Ponkarthik tells me that these are given as complimentary starters to every customer. “This is another way for us to get honest feedback from customers and so we try new flavours everyday. If people like it, we add it to our menu,” he adds.

As for starters, we are served Jalapeno Cheese Corn Toast, crispy cheese toast topped with corn and olives followed by Juicy Chicken Lollipops, crunchy fried chicken, with juicy insides and a very spicy chilli sauce coating. Up next, we are served Spicy Kheema Pao with buttery soft pav and a rich filling of chicken kheema and mint chutney. “You won’t find the regular burgers and sandwiches here. The burgers here come with grilled patties and the house-made buns. Also, we use focaccia bread for all our sandwiches,” he tells us as Paneer Tikka Foccacia Sandwich (a perfect option for vegetarians) comes to our table with a Russian salad (with apple, pineapple, carrots) for sides.

Meanwhile, I’m served with various juice specialties including a thick shake of Banoffee (banana, coffee and chocolate), a yummy rose banana and raisin juice and the Green Smoothie, a delightful combination of kiwi and spinach.“We do not add any artificial colours or flavours to the juices we serve here. Right now, we are specialising in fresh fruit smoothies and vegetable shots using spinach, coriander and such,” Ponkarthik shares.

What comes to the table next is a mighty Chicken 65 Burger, a specialty here, I’m told. With evident layers of cheese, mayo and lettuce along with grilled chicken filling, the burger sure looks appealing but had the filling been more crispier, it would have made up for the bland taste- but cheese lovers, go for it!

A huge portion of BBQ Chicken Submarine Sandwich is what graced the table next. With a spicy filling of chicken in barbecue sauce spread on lettuce, this sandwich is a meal in itself. We end the tasting with the best of all their juices, the extremely sweet Paan Smoothie. Thick and rich in gulkand (sweet rose) flavour, what came in a mason jar with sprinkles on top was pure delight.
